The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Charleston, West Virginia
Celebrating over 45 years of Community Service
In 2007, The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation turned forty-five. This means in terms of human development we have hit
mid-life, the age of questioning. As a Foundation we are looking back at
past accomplishments and forward to new challenges and opportunities. The Foundation can serve as the architect designing
solutions to the needs of society. We may not always fund it. We may
seldom build it. We may never own it. But we recognize the unique talent,
skills and opportunities philanthropy can bring to the challenges facing
our communities, our region, our state and beyond.
Vision Statement The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation seeks to enrich the lives of those we serve - our contributors, our beneficiaries and our community - by being the premier provider of philanthropic and charitable services for all citizens in our region.
Brief Overview The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation is a charitable community trust organized in 1962 to accept contributions, create and administer funds, and make grants for the benefit of the people of the Greater Kanawha Valley. The Foundation is a collection of many separate Funds varying in size from ten thousand dollars to more than nine million dollars. At the end of 2008, there were about 510 Funds. Each Fund is separate with its own agreement, its own donors, and its own philanthropic purposes. The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation was ruled to be a “public foundation” under the Tax Reform Act of 1969, and, as such, enjoys many tax advantages not granted to private foundations.
